Qualifications and Experience

Zoë first gained a MusB (Hons) degree in Manchester from the University of Manchester (Joint Course), then a GRNCM (upper level) and PPRNCM in flute from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester the following year. She achieved qualified teacher status through the GTP (graduate teacher programme) in 2008 from the Institute of Education in London and became an Examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in 2010, for whom she now trains new ABRSM examiners and presents as part of the Teacher Development Programme.

Zoë began working as a one-to-one teacher in 2000, working for both the public and private sectors (Hertfordshire County Music Service, St Albans High School, Buckingham College Preparatory School); she has been involved with conducting ensembles for school-age children since this time.

In 2003 she established ‘Flutes at the Barns,’ a programme of residential courses for adult flute players.  The courses provide the opportunity for adults to improve their playing through workshops, masterclasses and performances and to share musical experiences through ensemble playing; they always prove to be sociable and enjoyable experiences too!  Held several times a year in beautiful locations across the UK, with occasional courses held overseas.  Zoë was invited to teach at Benslow Music Trust in 2008, and established a popular residential course for adult flautists which she tutored until 2015. She has also tutored for Flutes Inspired in Italy and Spain. Zoë is invited - by flute choirs, education departments, flute communities and small groups of players - to give Flute Days throughout the year, and these have taken place in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Zoë joined the Quadrivium Woodwind Quartet in 2004, making weekly visits to primary schools across Hertfordshire to present live interactive workshops and introduce children to woodwind instruments; during this period she visited over 100 different schools.  Zoë still enjoys making workshop-visits to schools; these days she provides tailor-made workshops (either one-off or a series of visits) to secondary schools, covering subjects such as composition, African music, music and drama, modern music and the elements of music.

In 2007 Zoë gained qualified teacher status (QTS) through the GTP programme, which involved higher education study alongside part-time music teaching to classes of children aged 11 - 18.

Alongside the rest of her musical career Zoë’s current teaching portfolio includes private one-to-one tuition in her home studio , flute teaching and ensemble coaching at St Albans School , providing workshop visits to schools with Pangenesis and tutoring Residential Courses and Flute Days.
